Pieria Monuments
There
are many monuments in the Pieria region. The most important part of the temples
or monasteries are from the Byzantine period. Most are located in southern Pieria,
in the mountain areas because they offer more security for the Greeks against
pirates and other invaders.
Tis
Isodion Theotokou sanctuary is part of the old Petra monastery dating from the
eleventh century. Georgiou Agiou old monastery, located near Ritina, is a Byzantine
building built in sec. XV murals in 1494 and 1619. Old Agiou Dionysiou monastery,
on Mount Olympus (first half of XVI century) was a complex of fortresses, with
mills, outbuildings of the monastery and Firiza to cut wood and animals.
The
new Agiou Dionysiou monastery is situated in the Old Skala Mitoc, near Litohoro,
a place where the monastery was transferred after the destruction of other ancient
monasteries by the Germans in 1943. Tis Kimiseos Theotokou Temple is situated
in Kontariotissa. The temple was founded shortly before the end of the first millennium.
Agias
Triadas Temple was built on a rock near Vrontou, initially as a monastery in the
early eighteenth century. Nikolaou Agiou Temple in Palea Vrontou was built in
1876. Agias Paraskevias Temple, situated in Ano Milia, was built in the seventeenth
century and, according to tradition, Kosmas Aetolia was a teacher there.
Agiou
Athanasiou Temple, situated in Ano Skotina, was built in XVII Century. It is decorated
with remarkable mural paintings. Finally, a very famous monument situated on a
hill near the motorway to Athens is the Castle of Platamonas. The camp was originally
built by the Byzantines and the Franks restructured it in the early thirteenth
century. It is now restored and hosts music concerts and various cultural events.
