A very faimous archaeological site is Dion - the city of Zeus - the holy city of the ancient Macedonians, located at the eastern foot of Mount Olympus.

The city was surrounded by a square-shaped fortress and was crossed by a dense network of roads. Entire neighborhoods of houses, workshops, shops and public buildings were brought to light.

The Greek Theatre, a fourth century building, where tragedies written by Euripides were played, is currently used for the same purpose. The remains of the temple that had replaced the cult of Arthemis were preserved almost intact.
