Pieria
has a large number of important archaeological sites. Most of them were brought
to light in recent years, and for those already discovered in past excavations

The
famous Dion town, prehistoric settlement from Makrygialos, ancient Pydna and the
close Byzantine neighbours Livithra and ancient Louloudies are some of the most
famous archaeological sites that can be visited.
Southwest
of town is a Makrygialos largest prehistoric settlements in Greece, dated since
5000 BC. In ancient Livithra, located between Leptokaria Palea and Skotina, Orpheus
ceremony initiated mysteries and preached the cult of Dionysus.
A very
faimous archaeological site is Dion - the city of Zeus - the holy city of the
ancient Macedonians, located at the eastern foot of Mount Olympus.
In
the archeological park you can walk through archaeological discoveries and you
can visit de museum nearby. Long excavations have brought to light several important
findings. The city was surrounded by a square-shaped fortress and was crossed
by a dense network of roads. Entire neighborhoods of houses, workshops, shops
and public buildings were brought to light.
The
Greek Theatre, a fourth century building, where tragedies written by Euripides
were played, is currently used for the same purpose. The remains of the temple
that had replaced the cult of Arthemis were preserved almost intact.
