trip to Katerini city - Pieria
Katerini
is a town in Northern Greece, the capital of Pieria prefecture. It lies on the
Pierian plane, between Mt. Pierus and Thermaikos Gulf, on an altitude of 14-45
m. The town has a population of 56,576 (according to the 2001 census). It is near
the city of Thessaloniki, the second largest city of Greece, which has been beneficial
for Katerini's development over the last years.
A
popular tourist destination, Katerini is very close to the sea (6 km.), to several
archaeological sites of great interest like the ancient city of Dion (5th century
BC, 17 km. away) and the Venetian castle of Platamon. The beaches of Korinos,
Paralia and Olympiaki Akti (or Katerinoskala) are very popular during summer.
The
town's name stems from Catherine of Alexandria (Agia Aikaterini), a Greek Orthodox
Martyr, who lived in 4th century A. D. It was liberated from the Ottomans on October
16, 1912. During the Nazi régime it was captured by the German army on
April 14, 1941 and was liberated three years later.
The
Cultural Center of Katerini operates as a completely renovated space, which has
a convention center, lecture hall for speeches, a public library, a chamber for
music education, a conference room and an art room. The multiplex culture
is the heart of the city. The municipal park hosts numerous cultural events, conferences,
lectures organized by both the Municipality of Katerini and cultural associations
and institutions of Himachal Pradesh.
There
are plenty of supermarkets, supermarkets, shops: souvenir shops, fur shops and
jewelry shops; restaurants, taverns, clubs bars, discos. You can bargain in many
of the shops as there is always the owner plus an assistant. Fur coats can come
extremely cheap if you know how to bargain.
You
will find restaurants at every step with large terraces and the smell of fresh
food coming from the kitchens attracting the passer by. The food in most of them
is delicious and at a good price. Maybe this is why you should not choose an all
inclusive package, this way you can try all the different restaurants.
The Public Library now covers the increased needs of our city. It has a lending
department, a reading department and a special wing dedicated to children's books.
The
open-air cinema has been an integral part of Greek life for most of the 20th century,
linking the aesthetic enjoyment of cinema by the city everyday. It wrote its own
story and was associated with large and small human moments. It is an element
of cultural identity for the Greeks and a trace memory of many generations. For
the Municipality of Katerini, the function of fashion is not a requirement, but
a conscious choice of quality, offering moments of nostalgia, relaxation and entertainment
on the big screen.
